Sexually transmitted infections
Some bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites can be transmitted during sex and can cause infections, which are referred to as sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or sexually transmitted diseases.
Itchiness, stinging or discharge in the genital area might be signs of an infection. If treated promptly, most STIs can be cured.

Syphilis
Syphilis is caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum and can progress chronically. Left untreated, syphilis leads to serious health complications.
Gonorrhoea
Gonorrhoea, colloquially known as the clap, is one of the most widespread sexually transmitted infections worldwide.
Hepatitis A
Hepatitis A is an infectious inflammation of the liver that is triggered by the hepatitis A virus.
Hepatitis B
Hepatitis B is an infectious inflammation of the liver that is triggered by the hepatitis B virus.
Hepatitis C
Hepatitis C is an infectious inflammation of the liver that is triggered by the hepatitis C virus.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

Herpes
Herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus, of which there are two types. Type 1 mostly causes oral herpes (cold sores), type 2 is the principal cause of genital herpes. The prevalence of herpes is very high.
Lymphogranuloma Venereum (LGV)
The sexually transmitted infection lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) is caused by subtypes of the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis.

Fungal Infections (Mycosis, Candida)
Mycoses are caused by an overgrowth of fungi. The most common vaginal type of infection is candida.

Bacterial vaginosis is the most common cause of vaginal discharge. It is an infection that can be caused by various bacteria.
