HIV
HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus which destroys the human immune system.
Some bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites can be transmitted during sex and can cause infections, which are referred to as sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or sexually transmitted diseases.
Itchiness, stinging or discharge in the genital area might be signs of an infection. If treated promptly, most STIs can be cured.
Some sexually transmitted infections are easily transmitted, which is why it’s important to inform your sexual partners about any infection. For more information, click here.
NOTE: Not all infections cause symptoms, and some symptoms disappear even while the infection is progressing. If you suspect a sexually transmitted infection, it is important that you see a doctor promptly. Left untreated, STIs can have serious consequences for your health. If you have multiple sexual partners, you should get tested at least once a year.
