The signs of an STI are not always obvious. Only a blood test can provide clarity. If you notice changes, pain or discomfort in your anal or genital area, it’s important you quickly seek medical advice. Most STIs are curable or can be effectively treated.
Some bacteria, viruses, fungal infections and parasites can be transmitted through sex and cause infections. They are therefore called sexually transmitted infections (STIs), or sometimes sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
Itching, burning or discharge in the genital area can be signs of a sexually transmitted infection. Most STIs are curable or can be effectively treated.
